How to use this therapist directory

Start with your state or city to see who practices near you, or open a specialty page if you already know what you want help with. The listings are licensed mental health professionals, mostly counselors and marriage and family therapists, along with clinical social workers and psychologists.

Not sure which kind of help fits? Describe what you're going through and we'll suggest therapists who match, instead of leaving you to sort through every profile.

Questions about finding a therapist

What's the difference between a therapist, a counselor, and a psychologist?

"Therapist" and "counselor" are used for much the same thing: a licensed clinician who provides talk therapy, such as a licensed professional counselor (LPC or LMHC), a marriage and family therapist (LMFT), or a clinical social worker (LCSW). Psychologists hold a doctorate (PhD or PsyD) and also provide psychological testing, for example evaluations for ADHD. In most states psychologists do not prescribe medication; psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners do.

Where can I find marriage counseling or couples therapy?

Open the couples therapy guide for a national overview, or the specialty-by-city section for couples therapists in a particular city. Marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) are trained to work with relationships, though other licensed therapists see couples too.

How do I find an online therapist licensed in my state?

Use the online section above: each page lists therapists in that city who offer video sessions. Therapists can generally only see clients located in a state where they're licensed, so pick the page for the state you'll be in during sessions.
